Reverse-Engineered Boat Vent — Custom 3D Scanned Replacement for "Seven Seas"

The Problem

The original air vents on this customer's boat, "Seven Seas," had done their job for years but were done for — brittle, faded from sun exposure, and starting to crack apart. These aren't a part you can just order from a catalog; they're a specific shape and a specific mounting pattern with no manufacturer left to call. On top of replacing the part, the customer had one custom request: work the boat's name into the design.

The Process

The first step was capturing the exact geometry of the original part before it degraded any further. I scanned the vent using a Revopoint Metro YPro 3D scanner, then brought the raw scan into Revo's editing software to clean up noise, merge the individual scan passes, and convert everything into a single usable mesh.

From there, the scan data moved into Shapr3D, where the actual reverse engineering happened. Rather than trying to 3D print directly from scan data — which is rarely clean enough for a finished part — I used the mesh as a dimensional reference and rebuilt the vent as a proper CAD model, cross-checking every measurement against the physical part with digital calipers. That combination of scan data and hand measurement is what gets a reverse-engineered part to actually fit right, not just look right.

Since I was rebuilding the part from scratch anyway, this was the natural point to add the customer's requested touch — working a clean "Seven Seas" engraving into the housing, something the original vent never had.

The Result

The final vents were printed in white ASA specifically for the application — constant UV exposure and outdoor weather are exactly the conditions ASA is built to handle, where a material like PLA would just end up back in the same brittle, faded state as the original part within a season or two.

The customer gets a vent that matches the original design, fits the existing mounting holes, should actually outlast the part it's replacing, and now carries a personal touch the original never had.
