Custom Product Design: Concept to Finished Part
Not every project starts with a broken part to scan — a lot of them start with nothing but an idea. Custom product design is how we turn a concept, a sketch, or even just a description into a real, manufactured object. Here's what that process actually looks like from first conversation to finished part.
Step 1: Understanding the Idea
Every custom project starts with understanding what the part actually needs to do — not just what it should look like. What's it made of? Where does it live? Does it need to hold weight, survive outdoors, fit against something else exactly? These constraints shape every decision that follows, so getting them right upfront saves rework later.
Step 2: CAD Design
This is where the idea becomes a real, dimensioned model. Working in CAD software, we build the part as an actual 3D object with precise measurements — not a sketch, a manufacturable design. This is the same skill set behind our reverse-engineering work, just starting from a concept instead of a scanned original. If a part needs to fit an existing object, mount to something specific, or match dimensions you already have, this is where that gets nailed down.
For more complex projects, this step often includes a few rounds of revision — adjusting proportions, fixing a feature that wouldn't print or fit cleanly, or refining the look once you can actually see it in 3D instead of just imagining it.
Step 3: Choosing How It Gets Made
Not every part is a 3D print. Depending on the shape and application, a custom project might involve:
- 3D printing — for parts with real three-dimensional geometry, enclosures, brackets, or functional pieces
- Laser cutting — for flat components, panels, or engraved detail
- UV printing — for full-color graphics or branding directly on the finished piece

Step 4: Material Selection
The right material depends entirely on how the part gets used — indoor display piece versus something that lives outside, decorative versus load-bearing, one-off versus something that needs to survive years of handling. Step 5: Printing, Finishing, and Delivery
Once the design and material are locked in, the part gets manufactured and finished — sanded, painted, UV printed, or left raw depending on what it needs. For parts that need a specific look, our finishing process covers what goes into taking a print from "obviously 3D printed" to a genuinely finished product.
