UV Printing Explained: What It Is and How We Use It
We added UV printing to the shop a while ago now - a different technology from the 3D printing we usually talk about here, and one that opens up things FDM printing can't touch. Full-color photos, logos, and artwork printed directly onto wood, metal, acrylic, glass, leather, and dozens of other materials, with real raised texture built right into the print. We run this on a Eufy E1 and have an xTool O1 Omni on the way, so here's what the technology actually does and what it means for the kind of custom work we can now take on.
What UV Printing Actually Is
Think of it as a cross between an inkjet printer and a resin 3D printer. A UV printer lays down special ink in thin layers, and a UV LED array cures each layer instantly as it's printed. Because the ink cures solid on contact instead of soaking into the material, it bonds permanently to almost any flat-ish surface — and because layers can be stacked, the printer can build actual raised texture into the print, not just flat color.
That's the part that surprises people: it's not just "printing a sticker." A UV printer can lay down a base white layer, build up textured relief for things like brush strokes or raised lettering, then cap it with a gloss layer — all in one pass, permanently bonded to the object underneath. The white layer matters more than people expect: it's what makes color show up true on dark or transparent materials.
UV Printing vs. UV DTF vs. DTG
You'll see all three of these terms used around this technology, and they cover different jobs:
- UV / DTO (direct-to-object) — ink is printed straight onto the final object and cured in place. This is what gives you the raised texture and the most durable, permanent bond. Best for flat or mostly-flat rigid items that fit on the print bed.
- UV DTF (direct-to-film) — the design is printed onto a transfer film first, then applied to the object afterward through a laminator. This is how curved, oddly shaped, or oversized items get covered — tumblers, bottles, mugs, anything that won't sit flat on a bed.
- DTG (direct-to-garment) — ink printed straight onto fabric. Only relevant for apparel and textile jobs, and only on equipment with a garment-printing mode.
What It's Actually Good For
- Personalized items — tumblers, phone cases, wallets, ornaments, awards
- Business branding — logos directly on product packaging, tools, or promotional items
- Cosplay and prop detailing — printing insignias, wear patterns, or fine graphic details directly onto a finished prop instead of hand-painting them
- Signage and displays — full-color, durable prints on acrylic or wood that don't fade or peel like a vinyl decal
- Small-batch product runs — no minimum order size the way outsourced printing usually requires
How We Actually Use It
UV printing rarely stands alone in our shop — it's usually paired with 3D printing, laser cutting, or both. Here's what that looks like in practice.
3D Printed + UV Printed Combos
A lot of our work starts on the 3D printer and finishes on the UV printer. Cake toppers, challenge coins, and magnets are a good example: the base piece gets printed for shape and structure, then UV printed on top for full-color artwork, text, or a logo that would be impossible to get that crisp with paint alone.

Laser Cutting + UV Printing: Light Boxes
This is where things get layered. Our light boxes start with acrylic panels cut on the laser, housed in a case we designed and 3D print in-house, wired with COB LED lighting for even edge-lit glow. The UV printer handles the artwork on the acrylic itself — full color, sharp detail, permanently bonded to the panel instead of a vinyl decal that can peel. Laser cutting, 3D printing, and UV printing all show up in a single finished product on this one.
Signage
Wedding signs and real estate signs both benefit from the same thing: UV ink doesn't fade, peel, or wash out the way a printed vinyl sticker does over time outdoors, and it can go straight onto wood, acrylic, or metal without a separate mounting step.
Drinkware & Glass
Tumblers, mugs, and glass items usually go through UV DTF rather than direct printing, since they're curved — the design prints to film first, then wraps onto the object. Same durable, permanent result, just a different path to get there.
DTF Transfer Stickers
For designs that need to go on something that can't fit the printer or isn't a great direct-print candidate, we produce DTF transfer stickers — printed on film, then applied wherever they're needed.
NFC-Enabled Products
This is where UV printing crosses over into something a little different: custom digital business cards and NFC keytags with an actual NFC chip built in. Tap the card or tag against a phone and it can pull up contact info, a website, a social profile, or trigger an automation — no app required. We integrate the chip recessed directly into the printed part or product itself, so it's built in rather than stuck on, and the UV printer handles the full-color design and branding on top. The keytags work equally well as an actual keychain or a shareable digital card, depending on what someone needs it to do.

The Equipment We Use
Knowing the equipment behind your order matters, so here's what's actually running when we take on a UV printing job.
Eufy E1 is our current workhorse. It handles direct UV printing on rigid, mostly-flat objects across 300+ materials — wood, metal, acrylic, glass, leather, stone, ceramics, and more — and builds texture up to 5mm thick. It also supports UV DTF for curved or irregular items through a laminator attachment. This is the machine behind most of our current personalized and branded item orders.
xTool O1 Omni (UV + DT Fabric Edition) is on order and will expand what we can take on. It's built as a 4-in-1 system covering UV, UV DTF, DTG, and DTF from one machine, with texture up to 7mm and a rated resolution of 720×1440 dpi. The DT Fabric edition specifically adds garment printing — direct-to-garment and film transfers — which the Eufy doesn't do natively. Once it's in the shop and tested, this becomes our option for apparel work and larger-format flat pieces.

Between the Eufy E1 today and the xTool O1 Omni once it arrives, we can cover direct UV printing, UV DTF, DTF transfer stickers, and eventually garment printing — often paired with laser-cut acrylic or a 3D printed component depending on what the project needs.
