How Laser Cutting Works (And What We Use It For)
We recently added laser cutting to the shop, and it pairs with 3D printing in ways that surprise people. Where a 3D printer builds a part up layer by layer, a laser cutter works the opposite direction — it cuts or engraves flat material with a focused beam, fast and precisely. Here's what it actually does, and how we use it alongside printing and UV work.
What Laser Cutting Actually Is
A laser cutter moves a focused beam across a flat sheet of material, either cutting all the way through it or engraving a shallow mark into the surface. Cutting and engraving are the same machine, same beam — the difference is power and speed. A slow, high-power pass cuts through; a fast, lower-power pass just scores the surface for engraving.
The material matters as much as the machine. Acrylic cuts with a clean, flame-polished edge straight off the bed — no sanding needed. Wood cuts well but chars slightly at the edge, which is often part of the look. Some materials, like PVC and certain plastics, release toxic fumes when cut and should never go anywhere near a laser.
How We Use It: Acrylic Light Boxes
This is the clearest example of laser cutting and 3D printing working together in one product. The acrylic panel — the part that actually displays the design — gets cut and engraved on the laser. The case that holds everything together is a 3D printed part we designed ourselves. Inside, COB LED lighting gets wired in to edge-light the acrylic, which is what gives the design that glowing, floating look.
Three different processes, one finished product: laser-cut acrylic for the display panel, 3D printed housing for the structure, and UV printing when the design calls for full color instead of just engraved lines. What Else Laser Cutting Is Good For
- Signage — cut lettering, logos, or shapes from acrylic or wood for a clean, dimensional sign
- Engraved gifts — names, dates, or artwork engraved into wood or acrylic
- Templates and jigs — precise flat patterns for repeatable work
- Gaskets and flat parts — cut from rubber, felt, or other flat stock to an exact shape
- Layered artwork — stacking multiple cut layers of acrylic or wood for a 3D relief effect
Laser Cutting vs. 3D Printing: When to Use Which
These aren't competing technologies — they solve different shape problems. Laser cutting is the right call for anything that's fundamentally flat: panels, signage, gaskets, engraved surfaces. 3D printing is the right call for anything with real three-dimensional geometry: enclosures, brackets, functional parts with internal features. A lot of our best projects use both, the same way the light boxes do — flat laser-cut face, 3D printed structure underneath.
