How to Dry 3D Printer Filament (And Why Your Prints Keep Failing)
There's a specific kind of print failure that makes people blame their printer, buy a new hotend, and reinstall their slicer twice. The surface comes out rough. The walls have gaps. Strings web across every gap, and if you lean in close, the nozzle is quietly popping and crackling like a tiny bowl of cereal.
None of that is your printer. That's water.
Every common filament absorbs moisture from the air — some in weeks, some in hours. At printing temperature, that trapped water flashes to steam inside the nozzle, blowing the plastic apart as it extrudes. No slicer setting fixes it, because the problem happens after the slicer's job is done.
How to tell
Wet filament has a signature. If you're seeing more than one of these at once, moisture is the first thing to rule out — before retraction tuning, before temperature towers, before replacing anything.
The sound is the most reliable tell. A dry filament prints silently. If you can hear faint pops and ticks from the hotend, there is water in there.
How fast it happens
Faster than most people expect, and it varies enormously by material:
- Nylon — hours. A spool left out overnight can print noticeably worse the next morning.
- PC and TPU — a few days to a week.
- PETG — one to two weeks in humid conditions.
- ABS and ASA — a few weeks.
- PLA — the most forgiving, but it still degrades over a month or two on an open shelf.
Humidity drives all of it. In a dry climate a spool might sit out for months without trouble. Anywhere humid — coastal, subtropical, or just a garage in summer — the timelines above are optimistic.
Drying settings by material
The rule that matters: dry below the temperature at which the plastic softens. Go too hot and the outer wraps fuse together, and you'll be fighting a welded spool instead of a wet one.
Longer at a lower temperature is always safer than shorter at a higher one. If you're unsure, take the low end of the range and add two hours.
What to dry it in
A filament dryer is the straightforward answer. It holds a stable low temperature, vents humid air, and most models let you print directly from the unit — which matters more than the drying itself for nylon and PC, since they reabsorb moisture while they're being printed.
A food dehydrator works well and often costs less. Look for one with an adjustable thermostat and enough vertical clearance for a spool; some people remove the middle trays to make room. Check its actual temperature with a separate thermometer, since the dial markings are frequently optimistic.
An oven is the risky option. Most home ovens cycle 15–20 °C above and below their setpoint, and the low end of that swing is often above PLA's deformation point. If it's what you have, use an oven thermometer, keep the door propped slightly open, and never walk away from it. Never use a gas oven or a microwave for this.
Keeping it dry afterward
Drying is a fix. Storage is the actual solution, and it's much cheaper.
A sealed container with rehydratable desiccant beads holds a spool indefinitely. Airtight bins with gasket lids work; so do vacuum bags. Add a small humidity indicator card so you can see the state of things at a glance rather than guessing — under 20% relative humidity is the target.
Silica gel packets from packaging are fine to reuse, but they saturate quickly and silently. Indicating beads that change color are worth the small extra cost, since a saturated desiccant is exactly as useful as no desiccant.
The habit that saves the most grief: bag the spool when you finish a print, not when you notice a problem. Filament sitting on the printer between jobs is the single most common way spools go bad.
One honest caveat
Drying reverses moisture damage completely — the plastic itself isn't harmed, and a properly dried spool prints like new. But it won't fix anything else. If your prints still string after a full drying cycle, the problem is retraction or temperature, and you've at least eliminated the variable that masks every other diagnosis.
